Many thanks to Speaker219 who tested the code extensivly.
Type the hex code of the item you want in the chat (e.g. 001c for gold roses), submit your message, then press start+select to receive the item in your first inventory slot. If the hex code contains a letter, make sure you type it in lowercase. The code will only work in your town.

Version 3 does but unfortunately it hasn't been ported to 1.1 or EU yet. For those of you with 1.1 and EU, you're stuck with v2 which only works in your town.
