No, I restarted.

Do the chores first. Also, make sure Nook has blabbed about the HRA and the point system. Then, go in, buy an item, go back out, and go back in. Make sure you're doing it offline.
I just tested it on my 1.1 game and it works fine.

Works still, you just have to read it well to understand it. A lot of people also do it this way.
