What exactly are we looking at for the size they need to be? I have been waiting to use a more complicated model tool for this and want to try milkshape3D.

I honestly already understand the whole item making process, but I don't want to be limited to just the axe tool.

FWIW: The pokeballs that fit into the triple shell are 144 triangles in size. Very simple because the technology is very simple. Larger number of triangles won't fit.
The exact upper limit depends on the details of the model you start with. Try making something that looks good in MilkShape3D (with texture) and email me the files (.ms3d and .bmp for texture). If it is a cool place to start (ie. something better than colored spheres), then it *may* be worth the effort to make it into an item.
It takes a lot of work to make new items (even more work to make them cool). As mentioned before, due to the lack of interest, the time for custom items may have already passed.
