The tutorial is yet to be written (Tutorial #9 on my list)
It is very easy. Most of it is warnings to follow the rules: #1) Use TestTown, not your own town. #2) Don't pickup or equip the DLC axe/lightsabre, #3) don't put on a funny DLC hat.
Here's a quick overview (if it is too terse, please wait for the tutorial):

Upload a furniture item (using ITEM_Tool or LMT) using your USB Gecko or gamesave.
There are *two* samples provided "SAMPLES\ExptlBed1.brres" and "SAMPLES\ExptlBox1.brres". There are 1000+ more available in the game.

Then enter the house. The DLC items in the house will now use your graphics.
To change the graphics for USB Gecko users, exit and re-enter the house (instead of WiiMote DOWN and then RIGHT).
To repeat: don't mix DLC types. If editing furniture, don't pickup a DLC axe or put on a DLC hat.
