DSpet shouldn't give up on this project, why? because he is one of us! he wants cool stuff in the game as much as we do! nevertheless, I don't really think releasing a tool to make our own stuff would be a good idea.... why? because no matter how much you trust others, there's gonna be always someone who will screw things up. Sorry to say this, but those people are everywhere, I just watched a video on youtube of some hacker stealing from another player, yeah! somehow he got the full code that lets you pick up furniture in other people's houses, but! his is working on WiFi (stealing real people) So, I think it should be better to leave the HDLC tool just in the hands of the creator, well, he needs help making cool items i know, but as I said before; that tool can be passed down and copied, and it could eventually fall in the wrong hands... but i don't know about this, I'm just saying what I think. oh and I agree 101% that Nintendo releases cool things but also bad things, pikmin hat = cool, top = not cool.... but yeah! Ninty is lazy making more stuff for their games, so this is the perfect chance for fans to make what fans want!
now on the HDLC suggestions, lets see.
Dark Hero's Cap and Shirt (this would be awesome! to be Dark Link and I think it's pretty easy to make, just modify the colors of the original cap and shirt)
Skull Kid's Top, and Midna's Skin (well those masks need some official shirts, maybe? I've seen some awesome patterns out there that would work perfectly for this)
Mr. Game and Watch mask and Shirt (this would be nice and creative, even Ninty would be thrilled with this I bet)
I'm not sure up to what point HDLC can go but, maybe make a Master Sword (from axe) and at the same time make it look like you have a Hylian Shield on ur left arm.
Super Saiyan Wig (this would be really awesome! the name says it all)
With all due respect of the missing characters from brawl, there could be at least a Mewtwo mask ;) ( I bet Pokemon fans and all those disappointed that Mewtwo didnt make it for brawl would love this)(yup I'm one of them)

I'd like to see some more furniture items. Like a laptop like Lyle has. I new widescreen TV, like a flat panel plasma instead of the clunky one they have now.
If there was a way to kinda merge two items, it would be cool to see the phonebooth item merged with the lab chair so that the phonebooth had the electrical current at the top. Then it would look like Bill and Ted's time machine LOL.
I'm not so sure it's possible to run a code that allows one to steal furniture from someone's house. With skillful video-editing, however, a convincing hoax video can be made. And DsPet is talking about releasing a tool that allows you to test in your own town, but not release over wifi. I don't think it's as big an issue as you are making it out to be at all.
But he did say that people would eventually figure out how to get it over wifi. (Hi again btw ;))
As for the code that does exist, people here have the older version but it got changed for that reason exactly.
What i don't get is if someone could steal someone elses furniture why bother, i mean they can hack, why not just hack that too. Seems like they steal just to steal. Not that stealing because you want it makes it any better lol.

The download comes from their servers. Here are the 3 URLs you can check to see what is happening at Nintendo:

I *assume* it is identical to the Japanese release from last year. I haven't tested it.
If someone has a WiiBrew EU setup, can you please confirm:
Install an old backup (one without DLC). Run EZ_DLC_Install to confirm there is nothing there.
Then run the PAL version of AC:CF/AC:LGTTC. Do what is necessary to get the EU version of red Pikmin hat into your town from the giveaway (ie. from the Nintendo server)
Then check the gamesave with EZ_DLC_Install. I suspect it will now report you have the "red Pikmin" hat installed. If it reports something else, please let me know.
(if they changed it in any way, eg: fixing the typo for "red", then EZ_DLC_Install will detect it)

It's on the backburner for a while. Give it more time. The game was relatively new when the first test release came out. The non-Hackers weren't ready for user created items (and they freaked out). Many people are happy waiting till next month for the US release of the red pikmin hat...
As far as the tools go, the current bottleneck is the 3D model layout (how the polygons and other data are put together). This requires more reverse engineering. Once that is figured out, many more things will be possible.
I had an idea, though it may be awkward. You bring up a valid point that people freaked out about the user made material taking up slots. I think it's ridiculous. But what if you were to release your silly test items that we are all so eager to see, but do so under the same hex slots as the original test items? that way, wiibrew users could just remove the first ones to test out the new ones and even change back if they wanted to, but people wouldn't have to worry about it taking up more slots in their game. AND it might demonstrate how harmless the overlap possibility (which is being generous with words) really is. Just a thought. I don't even know if it's possible, but I'm selfish and want to see your silly items. Thanks for the wonderful addition you've made to a series I have long enjoyed. I think it's just fantastic.

Some people threatened restarting their towns to get rid of the DLC they couldn't even see. Would regular users restart their town to get something they could actually see and use?
Interesting possibilities. Something to try later. The game is still new (less than 3 months old) and the tools are still very primitive. Probably later in March.
I very much see your point. But perhaps that's why it will work so well as a wiibrew-only kind of thing. And at the same time, if people are so willing to restart their towns just to get the new items, I'd say why not let them? People have gotten pretty tired of their dust-bowl towns anyway. I dunno. thats what good hackers do, find what real and common people like and do it for them. all this can be fixed easily. we just need a poll of several "possible" new items and put it out there where people will call their favorites. and as of "haters" screw them! they were explained plenty of times how this HDLC works and how it is not gonna harm their games, if they dont wanna listen and remain ignorant for the rest of their lives then its their problem, "its not official legit stuff from Nintendo" so what!?? its just a game!! not a dang bank account ur hacking here! and about releasing the tool, well thats kinda bad if u ask me, not everyone its gonna follow the rules. There's a lot of people who could mess up the DLC for the whole game worldwide if they start spreading crappy stuff, thats why I wouldnt put the tool out there, but its too much work for just one person, so... here's an option, maybe you can select your HDLC team, just people you really trust and wouldnt give it away to other people who might mess it up, and what stuff to make? well maybe the poll of pre-selected items would work, and we could come up with a way to post on Animal Crossing Community and GameFaqs without getting the post banned, and tell them the place where they can go and cast their votes which could be a totally different webpage
Mew, DsPet's tool will not allow people to release HDLC. It only allows them to create and test it, but not send it over wifi. He and the community will be the final word on what goes out. That's the whole idea behind the "new plan". We are currently discussing the release of his other TEST items in the same hex slots as the existing hdlc, so that we can see a bit more of what he's learned without giving people anything else to complain about, should they have that unseemly propensity.

Exactly! Then the wii-brew users could test out the new developments without everybody freaking out about more spots being used. And then way down the line when we've learned more about the 3-d models and animations and such, the HDLC that is actually released will be much more advanced, and people will be much more receptive. I think so, anyway.

I think it's great that you are experimenting with all these things, I think you'll all come up with fantastic new items! I can't wait to see what else you've come up with.
While that may be true, the amount of people who play this game are lowering. It's just not fun when nothing new ever happens. For me, DLC is the only reason to stick around and keep playing. It's a fun social game, but let's face it, there's only so much you can do. Once everything is said and done, there's nothing left but to move on or wait for more content. And since Nintendo feels it's appropriate to release DLC no more than once a month, you're pretty much the only source for new items. I know you're working hard, and I look forward to whatever is on it's way.Quote:

BTW: New Play Control Pikmin will be released in North America on March 9, 2009. Expect the "red Pikmin" hat DLC to be (re-)released to US/NorthAmerica users to promote the game.
Remember, the Nintendo give-away updates are for promoting Nintendo product releases.
They aren't doing it to invent new items to keep the existing owners interested. Nintendo already has your money.
BTW: That's the role for the "hackers", to make the games more fun, for free after you bought the game.

FWIW: the tools are still on the back burner, but they are slowly getting better.
After the 4 month anniversary, expect hacked DLC to ramp up again.
BTW: The "polygroups" are figured out, more or less (thanks again to the original work by William Hahne). That means things like 3D models with textures.
