Also I'm not sure about the method of payment I understand the money will help pay for the site but the way the memberships is set up seems a little strange......

We have it set up so if you donate you will be rewarded with VIP status. Donations are always welcome.

Correct but the Length of time you have V.I.P. membership for seems to be a little vague.

Except that by not having any contracts we won't get reimbursed if the site is forced too shut down.
