It will still work. Exact same features. Much slower.
So try the slow approach first. If you don't like the kind of things you can do, then don't waste the money.
However if you get into creating your own items and want them to be the next coolest DLC, consider getting the extra hardware and saving a lot of your time.

So ds pet could you make a keyblade prototype if not how long will it take to make one of those?
Has much work been done on the alternate hair items?
And if so, could one be created in the future that only adds on an effect, not changing the entire style (like many do)... Sort of like putting on a normal Accessory, but it changes to the hair color?
